It’s crucial to identify the types of individuals we should be wary of in these tumultuous times, especially those within our inner circle who hold significant influence over us. Such individuals may subtly encourage us towards wrongdoing, rationalizing and even applauding our poor choices. They may advocate for indulgence, dismissing moral concerns and urging us to compromise our integrity. This type of companionship poses a significant threat to our spiritual well-being, as it can corrupt our virtuous habits.

Therefore, it’s imperative to remain vigilant and discerning, recognizing how negative influences can lead us astray. As children of God, we must promptly distance ourselves from such individuals once we identify them in our lives, safeguarding our spiritual growth and salvation. Another indication that someone may be under negative influence is if they attempt to exert control and manipulate you. Consider this: God, in His wisdom and glory, does not impose control or coerce decisions upon you. While the Holy Spirit may guide and convict your heart, manipulation is fundamentally different. When someone seeks to control you, it suggests they are being influenced negatively. God granted you free will and the capacity to make choices, and any attempt to strip away that freedom, to impose their will upon you, indicates they are being influenced by negative forces. Throughout the Bible, individuals who displayed such a spirit of control were often manipulated by negative influences. For instance, Jezebel and Nebuchadnezzar exhibited this controlling behavior, with Nebuchadnezzar even demanding worship of a golden statue he erected. When three Hebrews refused to bow down, they were thrown into a furnace. Recognizing this controlling spirit in someone close to you is reason enough to distance yourself for your own protection. The third sign of negative influence is what can be termed as the facilitator. This individual goes beyond mere encouragement to sin; they actively enable and facilitate sinful behavior. For example, if you struggle with lust and are away on a work trip, the facilitator will provide opportunities and resources for you to act on that lust. They make it convenient for you to engage in wrongdoing. Jesus issued a severe warning about those who lead others into sin, emphasizing the gravity of the consequences. Evaluating your inner circle is crucial. If there’s someone leading you towards sin, it’s imperative to reconsider your association with them.

Another type of individual to avoid is what I’ll term as the discourager. This person has a knack for steering you away from God and causing you to doubt your faith. Unlike the tempter or facilitator, the discourager doesn’t actively push you towards sin. Instead, they dissuade you from engaging in spiritual activities. They might discourage you from joining a Bible study group or attending prayer meetings, offering various excuses to prioritize worldly pursuits over spiritual growth. Beware of their influence, as they’ll never acknowledge the importance of consistent prayer or the imperfections within the church. Instead, they’ll highlight the futility of spiritual endeavors, warning that neglecting prayer will hinder your progress as a Christian. In essence, it’s essential to remain vigilant against individuals who lead you astray or discourage your faith. Such negative influences can corrupt your virtuous habits and hinder your spiritual journey. Pray for discernment to recognize those who have been influenced by the enemy and seek out companions who are steadfast in their faith, capable of providing mutual encouragement and strength in the Lord.
