Why did the malevolent entities implore Jesus to dispatch them into the swine? The initial confrontation between Jesus and Satan culminated in Jesus emerging victorious over temptations, as recounted in Matthew 4:1-11. He then proceeds with his mission, confronting and subduing two significant strongholds of Satan: the spiritual realm, by exercising authority over the demons (Matthew 8:28-34), and the domain of affliction, by healing a paralyzed individual (Matthew 9:1-8).
Following a miraculous lull in the tempest, Jesus and his disciples resume their journey across the Sea of Galilee. The ensuing incident centers solely on Jesus, with no mention of the disciples, as documented in Matthew 8:28-34. Upon reaching the region of the Gadarenes, Jesus encounters two demon-possessed men emerging from graves, so ferocious that nobody dared to traverse that path. They exclaimed, “What business do you have with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?” Not far off, a sizable herd of swine was grazing. The demons beseeched Jesus, saying, “If you cast us out, allow us to enter the herd of swine.” Suddenly, the entire herd careened down a steep slope, plunging into the lake and meeting their demise in the waters. Witnesses to this spectacle, the swineherds, overcome with a mix of dread and wonder, rushed to the city, spreading the news of all they had witnessed, emphasizing the astonishing liberation of the formerly possessed men. The news swiftly circulated, prompting the city’s inhabitants, driven by a blend of curiosity and fear, to seek out Jesus. Upon encountering him, they collectively implored him to vacate their territory.

At this juncture, Matthew prompts us to deeply contemplate the nature of Jesus, raising the question: Who is this man? This inquiry lingers as Jesus and his followers arrive at the opposite shore, entering the region of the Gerasenes, characterized by distinct beliefs and practices evidenced by the presence of swine. Jesus’ arrival in this region is marked by a dramatic encounter with two individuals plagued by suffering and demonic oppression, an event also chronicled in the accounts of Mark and Luke. Mark, in particular, vividly portrays the anguish of a man bound with chains, yet exhibiting supernatural strength, breaking free from his restraints, and residing among tombs and mountains, tormented and inflicting harm upon himself. Upon spotting Jesus from a distance, this man rushes toward him and, in an act of desperation and recognition, falls prostrate, imploring, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me!” Jesus commands the evil spirit to depart from the man, inquiring about its identity. The response comes swiftly: “My name is Legion, for we are many.” The demon vehemently pleads not to be banished from the area. Nearby, a large herd of swine grazes on the hillside. The demons beseech Jesus, requesting permission to enter the swine. Jesus grants their plea, and the evil spirits depart from the man, taking possession of the swine. The herd, numbering about two thousand, rushes down the steep bank toward the sea, meeting their demise in the waters. Astonished, the swineherds rush to spread the news in the city and surrounding areas. The populace, intrigued and fearful, comes to verify the events. Upon arrival, they encounter the formerly possessed man, now seated, clothed, and in his right mind, causing them great astonishment. Witnesses recount the events involving the liberated man and the swine, leaving the people impressed and apprehensive, urging Jesus to depart from their lands. As he departs, the freed man expresses a desire to accompany Jesus. However, Jesus instructs him to return to his family and proclaim the mercy and great deeds of the Lord. The man obeys, spreading the news throughout the Decapolis, leaving all who hear amazed.
